A futuristic, kinetic sculpture/table clock by MB&F and L’Epée.
Remember the Starfleet Machine, MB&F’s first collaboration table clock with L’Epée, back in 2014? Well, that futuristic and truly unconventional timekeeping machine returns in a more compact size, equipped with a fleet of three small spacecraft, a crazy sci-fi design and touches of colour. Meet the new MB&F Starfleet Explorer.
MB&F was born as a concept lab, gathering experts in their fields around the idea of exploring the creative possibilities within the world of watchmaking. Indeed, Max Büsser crafts the Horological Machines or the Legacy Machines with partners, his so-called friends. Among the brand’s long-standing collaborations is the partnership with L’Epée 1839, the specialized high-end clockmaker based in Delémont, in the Swiss Jura. The joint-venture has given birth to over 10 co-creations. The first in this series of timekeeping UFOs was the Starfleet Machine, an intergalactic spaceship/table clock, straight out of Star Wars, featuring hours and minutes, double retrograde seconds in the form of turret-mounted laser cannons and a power reserve indicator.
This 2014 creation returns in a more compact version – 16.5cm x 11cm versus 29cm x 21cm – and the Starfleet Explorer Clock is available in three different colours (blue, green and red). In addition, the hour and minute indications of this futuristic clock are now accompanied by three small spacecraft in orbit around a movement, rotating every five minutes.
The hours and minutes are indicated by means of two discs and brightly coloured hands matching the colour of the spacecraft. More precisely, the minutes are read on the top on a revolving disc through a fixed hand. Just below, the hour hand rotates around a motionless disc.
The clock and its structure rest on three vertical steel arcs. The hand-wound movement of this kinetic sculpture is placed horizontally, while its regulator ticks vertically. Running at 18,000 vibrations per hour, its power reserve is of 8 days on one barrel. A double-ended key is used to set the time and to wind the movement.
