The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968G, now in White Gold Versions
The casual-chic Aquanaut Flyback Chronograph now in white gold and new colours.
The Aquanaut stands out for being a casual-chic Patek Philippe purpose-built for an active lifestyle. Introduced in 1997, It was the first Patek Philippe to feature a rubber strap, and it has been a staple for the brand ever since. In 2018 came the first Aquanaut with a chronograph movement with the reference 5968A. Following on what can be considered a blend of styles by Patek Philippe, the collection now expands with new colours and a new material with two references. Meet the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968G-001 and 5968G-010.
Back in 2018 Patek Philippe surprised many with the launch of the Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A, a spruced-up colourful interpretation of the Aquanaut. It marked the first time a chronograph movement would become available in the Aquanaut family and it remains part of the collection today. The vibrant orange rubber strap (with an optional black one), orange markings on the chronograph counter and orange set of hands might be polarizing, but make no mistake about it: this is a Patek Philippe through and through.
For 2021, Patek introduces two new dial colours and a new case material with references 5968G-001 and 5968G-010. While not entirely new in style, as we’ve seen the combination of either blue and green dials in white gold cases for the Aquanaut before, the addition of the chronograph movement brings extra flair and complexity to the collection. The 42.2mm wide and 11.9mm thick case is fashioned out of 18k white gold, which includes the chronograph pushers and the screw-down crown. It is fitted with sapphire crystals on both sides and is water-resistant to 120 metres.
The dial for the new Aquanaut Chronograph 5968G models have the familiar raised chequerboard pattern. The blue dial is finished with a sunburst brushing while the khaki-green dial is varnished and has a more grainy texture. Both dials have applied Arabic numerals and hour markers in white gold, filled with Super-LumiNova. The baton-style central hour and minute hands are also white gold with again treated with luminescent coating. The chronograph display is based on a white lacquered central sweeping seconds hand and a 60-minute counter positioned in the bottom section of the dial. This distinctively shaped sub-dial matches the bezel and has white printed markings and a white lacquered hand. A recessed date window at 3 o’clock, with a white disc and black numerals, completes the indications.
The movement inside the Aquanaut Chronograph 5968G is the same as in the stainless steel version introduced three years ago. This in-house integrated automatic flyback chronograph movement is 30mm in diameter and 6.63mm thick. The calibre CH 28-520 C runs at a frequency of 28.800vph while its power reserve is between 45 to 55 hours. It comes with a column wheel, a vertical clutch and flyback functionality. Visible via the exhibition caseback, it features all the things Patek Philippe is known for, including a Gyromax balance with Spiromax balance spring and, of course, the Patek Philippe seal. The rotor is made from 21k rose gold.
Both new references come on a composite rubber strap with a raised chequerboard pattern, matching the dial both in style and color. The strap is fitted with a white gold folding buckle. The two Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronographs (Ref. 5968G-001 and Ref. 5968G-010) are priced at EUR 60,200.
