The “Night Surfer”… there couldn’t be a better name for this watch, not only for its look or inspiration, but because it’s completely faithful to the guy that has once founded Time+Tide. If you know Andrew McUtchen, you’ll know what I mean by that. Today, our good friends from Australia are dropping their third limited edition watch, this time made together with the famous watchmaker from Le Locle, Zenith. And Defy Classic Skeleton “Night Surfer” that results from this collaboration is pretty cool.

Time+Tide is a large watch media that is based in Melbourne, Australia, and that has grown over the year to become the place for cool watch culture – there’s a typical Aussie relaxed vibe to these guys. And, the night surfer (the guy, not the watch) has decided to bring a watch that is exactly that. A true watchmaker’s watch, yet with a style that is anything but too serious. And it had to feel Australian too!

The base for this “Night Surfer” edition is the well-known Defy Classic Skeleton, the modern sports watch of the Le Locle-based brand. But this watch also comes with a series of firsts for Zenith – in fact, no fewer than 4 of them. The first microblasted titanium bracelet in a Zenith Defy Classic model. The first Zenith to have a star logo made of solid Super-LumiNova. The first Defy Classic Skeleton with a gradient dial. The first Defy Classic Skeleton with a luminous date frame. So indeed, the guys at T+T have worked hard on the base watch…

The design is that of the Defy collection, a modern sports watch with an integrated bracelet and barrel-shaped case. It is here made of lightweight titanium, with a microblasted finishing that gives it this matte, darker texture (no, it’s not a coating). The 41mm case is well proportioned and looks stealthy here, and for the first time is combined with a bracelet made of the same metal. Result, the watch is light, at just 95 grams. It features sapphire crystals front and caseback, and is water-resistant to 100 metres.

The main attraction of this Defy Classic Skeleton “Night Surfer” is the dial. And here, we’ll be talking about an openworked dial with the typically Zenith star-shaped baseplate, done in a bright, rather bold vertical gradient blue colour (going from dark to bright). The inspiration is “the sky-show that greets surfers who dare to stay out after sunset.” And to make it even cooler, both the Star logo at 12 and the date frame are picked up in SLN so they appear at night.

Under the hood is the in-house Calibre Elite 670 SK, an automatic movement with 50h power reserve and silicon escape-wheel and lever. The see-through back reveals dark coatings on all the parts and an openworked rotor with the star logo.
