Tutima M2 Coastline – A New Entry-Level Offer from the German Brand
Simpler and more affordable but still built for rough conditions.
Tutima, a Saxon manufacture based in Germany’s heart of watchmaking, Glashütte, is known for having a wide range of watches, from ultra-resistant military-inspired chronographs to complex, in-house produced elegant watches. After showcasing its watchmaking expertise with the Patria collection, the brand now moves to the other side of the range, with a new entry-level watch, the Tutima M2 Coastline. Simpler and more affordable – but still displaying military inspiration – and built to resist rough conditions.
This new watch has met with the criteria of resistance and reliability that characterises the M2 and M2 Seven Seas collections. If the design might feel familiar, it actually is easy to understand as these watches are inspired by the Military Chronograph of 1984, which was issued to Luftwaffe pilots throughout the 1990s. This watch was easily recognisable thanks to its tonneau case and the flat buttons to activate the chronograph (something which is still used by the brand today) to avoid snags in the cockpit. The M2 collection is the direct descendant of this NATO-certified watch, which now welcomes a new entry-level member.
For this reason, the Tutima M2 Coastline stays true to the thick, robust and perfectly protected tonneau case of the past, with its distinctive shape and masculine proportions. Made of fully brushed grade 2 titanium, it is, however, light on the wrist and easier to wear than you might expect. The diameter might be 43mm, but the case is compact and can be sported by smaller wrists – including me, and as you can see on the photos, the watch isn’t too large even on my 17.5cm wrist.
The use of pure titanium assures that the watch is both extremely lightweight and highly resistant. In fact, titanium is both more resistant to corrosion and to scratches than steel. The typical darker colour of this metal is also rather pleasant in the context of the Tutima M2 Coastline, giving it a more discreet look and a more military touch. Here it is combined to an equally solid titanium bracelet with folding clasp, also entirely brushed. Altogether, the M2 Coastline is built to cope with rough conditions on land and at sea – and can resist water pressure of up to 30 bars/300m with its screw-in crown and caseback.
As for the dial, Tutima offers two versions. The first one (not shown here) features a matte blue dial. The second version is presented in Graphite Grey and adds a slight dose of elegance with its distinctive colour and sunray brushed finishing, without compromising legibility and contrast. Hands and indices are generously filled with Super-LumiNova and perfectly contrast with the dark grey dial. The red-coloured seconds hand adds a bit of life to this overall very monochromatic package.
Powering this Tutima M2 Coastline is an automatic movement, calibre Tutima 330, based on a reliable and well-known ETA ébauche. It features a day-date display at 3 o’clock and, even if hidden underneath a plain titanium caseback, this movement is decorated with a specific rotor with a gold seal.
The Tutima M2 Coastline – especially this pleasant Graphite Grey version – is a nice option for those who want a solid, robust and reliable military-inspired timepiece. Priced at EUR 1,590 or USD 1,850, it also has a very decent price-quality ratio. More details on tutima.com.
