A phoenix rising from very, very complex ashes!
With SIHH 2019 fast approaching, brands are pre-releasing selected models to whet our appetites. Vacheron Constantin has released the first images of two unique pieces, Les Cabinotiers Grande Complication Phoenix and Les Cabinotiers Minute Repeater Tourbillon Sky chart, which we will introduce in a separate article. But for now, let’s look at the first model, a complex watch with no fewer than 15 complications.
The Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Grande Complication Phoenix is a one-of-a-kind creation combining an ultra-complicated movement and ancestral crafts – “Métiers d’Art” are deeply ingrained in Vacheron Constantin’s tradition. The collection name Les Cabinotiers is a reference to the watchmakers who used to work on the top floors of the brand’s historic Geneva building.
The Grande Complication Phoenix packs 15 complications into its lavishly decorated pink gold case: minute repeater, tourbillon, perpetual calendar (date, day of the week, month and leap year indication), power reserve indication, equation of time, sunset time, sunrise time, sky chart, age and phases of the moon, sidereal hours and minutes, seasons, Zodiac sign, and a striking mechanism torque indication. The different indications are displayed on either side of the case, on anthracite dials beautifully pairing the pink gold case. The movement is made of a staggering 839 parts. It is based on the hand-wound calibre 2755, operating at 2.5Hz and endowed with a 58-hour power reserve. Even though not visible, the movement is finished in the usual high-end style.
This extraordinary movement had to be encased in an exceptional habillage. Measuring a formidable 47mm in diameter, the 18k pink gold case showcases expert, meticulous craftsmanship. It is fully hand-engraved with a phoenix theme. It combines pounced ornament – or bas-relief – for the case flanks and fine line engraving for the bezel and caseback. The brand states that 300 hours of meticulous work were needed to fully engrave the case.
