The missing colour of the Overseas makes its debut for the 2018 collection
When introduced back in 2016, the redesigned Overseas was Vacheron Constantin’s answer to the highly coveted market of the luxury sports watch (a market dominated by AP and PP). First launched in blue and silver editions, later followed by warm and original brown versions, there was still one missing colour to complete the collection. Problem solved for 2018, with the introduction of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic 4500V and Chronograph 5500V, now with black dials (and even a reversed-panda for the Chrono).
If blue is the most prevalent colour on luxury sports watches (dark blue was the inaugural tone used on the precursors of this new market, the Royal Oak and the Nautilus), black is certainly another option that perfectly fits the idea of a sports watch. Elegant, discreet, contrasted and easy to match, black is sort of an inevitable choice – and usually, a “you can’t go wrong” choice too. Several options have been introduced already for the two cornerstones in the Overseas collection – the 4500V Automatic and the 5500V Chronograph. After classical blue and silver options, and more original yet pleasant brown versions, it’s time for these two watches with black veils to be unveiled.
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic 4500V Black Dial
The entry-level watch in the Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection is the 4500V Automatic. This 41mm watch, with an in-house self-winding movement (60h power reserve, double barrel, Poinçon de Genève certification), sees its sun-ray patterned dial with velvet finished tracks and inner-flange, now coloured in black. The way the dial is manufactured is still the same, with a translucent lacquer applied on top, which exposes the surface finishings underneath.
One of the main attraction of this new collection when it was launched was its interesting “easy-interchangeable” strap system and the fact that each watch was delivered with three different options: steel bracelet (and what a bracelet it is… one of the most nicely finished ones on the market), alligator leather and rubber. For this black dial version of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic 4500V (reviewed here), the idea is the same, with black leather and rubber included in the box, alongside the steel bracelet. The new black model will be priced accordingly to the rest of the collection, meaning EUR 20,000.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph 5500V Black dial
The second model to be introduced in black is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph 5500V (reviewed here). Again, it was already available with tone-on-tone blue, silver and brown dials. The collection is now completed by a black dial version, yet with one main difference; revealing contrasting sub-dials for the first time, making it a so-called “reversed-panda” watch (black dial with silver chronograph sub-counters).
Inside the 5500V Chronograph is a self-winding in-house movement, also certified by the Poinçon de Genève – a modern, integrated automatic movement with column-wheel and vertical clutch. The case of this chronograph version is slightly larger, at 42.50mm and again, we have the same easy-to-change strap system with a steel bracelet, a rubber strap and a leather strap included in the box. The price for this Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph 5500V Black dial will the same as the other versions: EUR 28,800.
