How to start a new watch brand if you don’t have the budget, but you do have an idea, the experience and required knowledge? Vincent Plomb, a watch constructor by profession, did it in a very unique way. He started his brand VicenTerra and launched his first watch by subscription.

It was August 2010 when I first told you about this new brand, simply after finding some information on Facebook. After I wrote about this amazing initiative I got in touch with Vincent Plomb and we mailed about his newly started watch brand and the new GMT-3. Late 2010 he was close to start production. Now VicenTerra started delivery of the first subscription-order batch.

If it wasn’t for social media, the brand VicenTerra would probably not have existed and the new GMT-3 would not be more than an idea and some drawings. Up until a few weeks ago, all press information and the website were available in French only, so I do hope spread the word in English now as well (again).

After this first batch of 100 pieces created for subscription-only buyers (for the special price of 5,000 CHF) the GMT-3 will be available through dealers for 15,000 CHF. And guess what… after the GMT-3 there will be more models coming from VicenTerra! Vincent already told me about ideas he has for other watches, again with intriguing complications. Later more about that, now the GMT-3…

The GMT-3 features a large three-dimensional globe that rotates around one axis going through both poles. The rotating globe can be seen from the dial side, from the back and through a port-hole in the side of the case!

Furthermore the GMT-3 has a day/night indicator (positioned at 12 o’clock), a second time zone GMT hand (positioned at 7 o’clock) and a retrograde date (positioned at 2 o’clock). And of course there are the central hours, minutes and seconds hands.

The dial has several openings, revealing the day/night indicator that is positioned slightly below the dial surface. Through several openings in the date chapter, the movement can be seen.

The globe can be set by a pusher at the 4 o’clock position; it has 24 positions so it can be set to one of the 24 main time zones. The pusher at 8 o’clock can be used to set the 24-hour GMT hand for setting a second time.

With the crown at 3 o’clock the hours/minutes, date and day/night indicators can be adjusted.

Inside ticks an ETA 2892 movement with a proprietary VicenTerra module. But also the rotor is a a special VicenTerra signature rotor. And if this isn’t enough, there are 7 diamonds set in the inside of the case back, which can be seen from the dial side below the GMT sub-dial. Here you can also find the number of the watch; this first batch is limited to 100 pieces.

The stainless steel case measures 44,60 mm by 54.50 mm (from lug to lug) and is 13.65 mm in height. Most parts of the case are polished, expect the case back, which is brushed and the bezel is satin finished. The GMT-3 is waterproof to 50 meters.

Here you can see the two sapphire crystals in the case back, one showing parts of the movement and the rotor and the other one showing the rotating globe.

I sincerely congratulate Vincent Plomb and other people behind the brand VicenTerra for this great achievement! And of course I do hope we will hear from them again very soon, regarding new projects. In the mean time you can check out the VicenTerra website for more information about the GMT-3 and its availability.
