Voutilainen TP1 Only Watch 2019 – a Pocket Watch, a Collaboration, a Voutilainen
From father to daughter, transmission of a vocation.
At the time of mass-produced everything, one of the hidden gems of Only Watch 2019 is a creation by Kari Voutilainen, one of the most revered craftsmen in the entire watch industry. The Voutilainen TP1 stands out for being a pocket watch and … the first collaboration between Kari Voutilainen and his daughter, Venla, 20 years old, freshly graduated from watchmaking school. The design of the case and dial was made by Kari; Venla chose the colours and the decoration of the movement.
The Voutilainen TP1 Only Watch 2019 is a beautiful, surprisingly modern open face pocket watch. Its TV screen case is fashioned out of titanium. It is 50.3mm by 50.3mm and it features cool three-hole security screws. Made from solid silver, the beautiful engine-turned dial is engraved with different geometric patterns. It comes in dark/light blue with contrasting orange accents.
The exhibition caseback offers a superb view of the movement framed by a blue guilloché ring with the caption ‘Kari & Venla – Voutilainen’. The movement is based on a vintage LeCoultre ébauche. As you have come to expect with any Voutilainen work, it is hand-finished to a level that is seldom seen. A veritable feast for the eyes, it features wonderful details including a large Guillaume balance wheel (a bimetallic thermo-compensating balance wheel) with Phillips overcoil hairspring.
The stylish and superbly crafted Voutilainen TP1 Only Watch 2019 comes with a brown hand-sewn leather fob with a titanium screw. Given that Kari Voutilainen manufactures only some 50 watches per year, we expect it to sell higher than its pre-auction estimate of CHF 50,000 to CHF 70,000. Lovely little thing. Along with Journe’s piece my favourite of the Only Watch selection.
I hope Venla starts making watches soon, similar to Kari’s style.
My GOD that’s a lot of money for a quirky gift!
I would disagree that it looks modern. To me it looks like it was made in the 1960s. It is carried out with charm though.Very desirable.
There is no doubt it is a beautiful object. To me it looks like the kind of thing Peter The Great would have given to his niece on her Confirmation.
No tourbillion? I thought it was mandatory in pocket watches
