The Patek Philippe Nautilus is one of those watches that has been on my personal wish-list for a long time. A few days ago I had the chance to try the Nautilus Chronograph ref.5980/1A on my wrist and now I know it… it made it to the top of my wish-list instantly.
I know, I know… on Monochrome there has also been moaning about the yearly price increases and the price of this specific stainless steel chronograph, which is close to € 40.000 Euro (including taxes). I still think the price is too high, however on the other hand I really want this watch. After trying it on my wrist at Leon Martens, one of the few Patek Philippe dealers in the Netherlands, I was convinced the Nautilus Chronograph is THE perfect all-round watch. Dressy, casual, sporty and incredibly comfortable.
When I have time for it I read several forums and other blogs and it will frequently show me new watches or unexpected oldies. I like when I come across something that triggers me and makes me go search for more information about a specific brand, a certain model or maybe a type of watch. But it can go further than just searching for some information…
Not sure if many of you recognize this, but from time to time I come across a watch that ‘really does it’ for me. After owning an old Lusina Super Compressor, I somehow missed this watch so I started searching the new for information about super compressor watches. This was several years ago and around that time, Longines had just released a new model called the Legend Diver. The Legend Diver has similar looks as the super compressor dive watches from the 1960’s and 1970’s. This triggered me to search for more info, look for photos and inevitably buy one myself.
In the mean time, my collection has experienced a few changes. Luckily all for the better, at least in my opinion. Unfortunately there are more watches in my collection with the ‘label’ never to be sold. This means raising budget from scratch, which always takes more time. Especially if you fall in love with a costing € 40.000 Euro. It might take some years, but it will be inevitable because I know this feeling… Not sure if you recognize it… but the comic below explains it perfectly.

This Nautilus is nice, but try the 5960, it is stunning in red gold, the grew dial is amazing. I think I will buy a condo first though… 😉
I don’t understand why any watch company makes a waterproof or watch called a dive watch without a bezel, so a diver can calculate how long they have been underwater. I know everyone buying a dive watch Isn’t a diver, but for the people who are,it would be great to be able to actually to use them for diving.
Dear Philip, the Nautilus isn’t a diver’s watch. So yes, it is water resistant (which is a good thing), but it isn’t meant for serious diving. A bit of swimming shouldn’t harm the watch, but you don’t need a diving bezel for a plunge in the pool 😉
I wish Patek would create a dive watch. The Nautilus was a success, so a dive watch would be awesome.
