Your Chance to Attend a Lecture by Roger W. Smith in London, November 27th
Britain’s most highly regarded watchmaker will explain the development of the mechanical wristwatch.
As Dr George Daniels’ student, the inventor of the co-axial escapement, Dr Roger W. Smith OBE (or simply Roger Smith) is today regarded as the most prominent master watchmaker in the UK. If you are into watches, there’s no chance that this name is unknown to you. And today, you can register for a free lecture by Mr Smith, in London. In short, something to raise your watch game to a higher level.
Roger W. Smith’s horological career began at the age of 16 at the Manchester School of Horology. During the course, Dr George Daniels (1926 – 2011), was a visiting speaker and inspired Roger’s ambition to hand-make watches. After eventually working alongside Dr Daniels to create the Millennium Series of watches, Roger established his own studio in the Isle of Man in 2001. He now crafts some of the most desirable watches of Great Britain, combining a classic look, a high level of mechanical beauty and superb hand-crafted dials and movements.
On Wednesday 27th November, Roger W. Smith will be giving a talk at City University, London entitled “Development of the Mechanical Wristwatch”. In this lecture, he will discuss “developments in modern mechanical wristwatches and will propose that, in recent decades, this has led to a regression, rather than a progression of the practical qualities of watches. Dr Smith will share his own observations from developing mechanical wristwatches and offer his own solutions to improving longevity and performance“.
Note that admission to this lecture is free, but places must be booked in advance. A great opportunity for anyone in London. You can register here, at City University’s website.
