The Atelier DE GRIFF x NOMOS Club 36 Limited Edition
A collaboration that serves up some technical surprises in a handsome edition of the NOMOS Club 36.
NOMOS is known for producing attractive, special editions, often in collaboration with different organisations. We’ve seen annual editions with retailers, limited editions dedicated to charities, and watches celebrating 175 years of watchmaking in the Glashütte region. The latest collaboration of the German independent watch manufacturer is with Atelier DE GRIFF, a Belgian creative studio with a passion for horology. Taking the Club 36 model as a starting point, meet the Atelier DE GRIFF x NOMOS Club 36 Limited Edition.
Considering the fact that the NOMOS Club is a very well-known collection, you’d expect this limited edition to have a different dial or maybe a new kind of strap or bracelet. And you’d be correct, in part. Going over the specifications of this limited edition reveals that Atelier DE GRIFF has not only sought to create a handsome iteration of the small 36mm NOMOS but also to up its performance in the process.
From the outside, there aren’t many changes. We still get the 36mm wide 8.2mm slim fully polished stainless steel case. These dimensions make for a very comfortable watch, as we’ve experienced with the NOMOS Club Campus Absolute Grey and Future Orange, which shares the same case. What has changed regarding the case, however, is its robustness. Atelier DE GRIFF and NOMOS have worked together to increase the water-resistance from a generally acceptable 100 metres to a very welcome 200 metres, moving it more towards a sports watch in terms of specs. This has been accomplished by using a double gasket in the crown system.
The Atelier DE GRIFF x NOMOS Club 36 L.E. comes with the first-ever black dial for the 36mm Club collection. Finished with a fine sunray brushing, it shimmers in the light. The printed hour indices have a subtle grey outline and have received a generous amount of Super-LumiNova. The familiar NOMOS Club 36 sword-shaped hands also have a dose of Super-LumiNova. At 6 o’clock, there is a recessed small seconds sub-dial with a 60-seconds scale in white print and a red hand.
Typically the NOMOS Club 36 uses the brand’s in-house Alpha calibre. In collaboration with Atelier DE GRIFF, though, the brand has fitted the hand-wound Alpha movement with the NOMOS Swing System found in the in-house developed DUW movements. It is identifiable by the blued hairspring, a feature you can see from the sapphire crystal caseback. In terms of specifications, the rest remains the same: 23.3mm x 2.6mm dimensions, manual wound, 17 jewels, 21,600vph, 42h power reserve, blued screws, Glashütte ribbing and perlage decoration.
The Atelier DE GRIFF x NOMOS Club 36 Limited Edition is worn on a NOMOS stainless steel bracelet with a steel clasp. It is limited to 21 pieces, in coherence with the year of release, and is exclusively available through Atelier DE GRIFF’s website for a price of EUR 1,549. The watch also comes with an original NOMOS Sundial Ring that can be worn as a ring or pendant.
