30 years after the intergalactic war first started, the Star Wars saga continues with a new blockbuster set to premiere on December 18th 2015. On that day, the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance will once again battle it out on the big screens as Star Wars: the Force Awakens hits theaters  A unique collaboration between a movie company, and a watch company, focussing around an absolute legendary movie-sequence, Devon Works has released the Star Wars by Devon. A very bold, blackened and stealthy time-machine, but is the force strong with this one?

The movie itself needs no introduction. Even if you are not a die-hard, obsessed fan of the science fiction genre or this franchise in particular, you know what Star Wars is and what it is about. It is just about the biggest sequence of movies in history, with total revenue of the movies of 4.8 billion USD so far.

After the original Star Wars: A New Hope, released in 1977, there have been two sequels (The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983) and three prequels (The Phantom Menace in 1999, Attack of the Clones in 2002, Revenge of the Sith in 2005). To be honest, I never understood the reason for not starting with movie 1 in the entire storyline but hey, who am I to judge? All I know is, the franchise is responsible for some of the most ground-breaking stuff in the business and cementing the legacy of George Lucas for as long as we will be around probably.

The trick Devon pulls off here is far from new, bridging the gap between watchmaking and the big screen. The Delorean-DNA by Romain Jerome is a fitting reminder of what a movie and a watch can have in common. The Devon Works Star Wars has an übercool look to it though, it certainly stands out from the crowd, perhaps even more than a normal Tread 1 would do. Technically there is nothing new to behold with this piece. The difference is purely esthetical. A DLC coated stainless steel case still houses an electrical-mechanical hybrid movement, which powers reinforced nylon belts to tell the time (As explained in the various articles about Devon Works).

Darth Vader and his Tie Fighter were the inspiration for this watch, that much is obvious. I like the fact that is not the heroes, but the villain that is the source of all the design cues on the Star Wars by Devon. The control panel or switchboard on his suit for instance, is mimicked by the green and red covers over the motors. The angled, octagonal “wings” of the Tie Fighter have become parts of the case, and the chromed out spikes on both sides of the case resembles the screws on Vader’s facemask. Finishing touch is the Imperial logo on the multifunctional crown of the Devon Works Star Wars.

The Star Wars by Devon will be available in a run of 500 pieces, at a retail price of $ 28,500 and will be delivered with a matching set of Tie Fighter cufflinks. A cool extra, is the Tie Fighter styled charger for the Star Wars by Devon. Remember, it is an electrically powered mechanical watch, so it needs some form of charging. The induction-charger kit is also provided with the set.
