Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon Bi-Axial in Tantalum
Hot off the press, is the introduction of a brand new Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon Bi-Axial in Tantalum. This is the fourth version of this iconic model that is inspired by a tourbillon pocket watch from the 1860’s. The Tourbillon Bi-Axial features a tourbillon that rotates around 2 axis and three sapphire bridges. It is limited to just 12 pieces and its retail price including taxes is slightly north of € 400.000 Euro.
Last year we showed you the black DLC coated titanium version that Girard-Perregaux had just introduced. As visually striking as the black DLC coated titanium is, using the precious metal tantalum adds much weight to the watch. This weight matches very well with an ultra luxury timepiece like Girard-Perregaux’s Tourbillon Bi-Axial.
Girard-Perregaux has chosen tantalum because of its durable and corrosion-resistant properties. The sapphire bridges with metallic black finish look great with the platinum dial and tantalum case; tantalum always has a naturally gray-blue color. The case measures 45 mm in diameter and this also adds to the very masculine looks of the highly technical timepiece.
The platinum dial features a circular guilloche motif and is galvanic grey finished. The main spring barrel features the characteristic elliptic pattern of the famous nickel and silver three parallel bridge pocket watch made by Constant Girard in the 1860’s.
The tourbillon is constructed from gold, steel, glucydur and grade-five titanium. Every part contributes in their own way to optimize the bi-axial tourbillon mechanism and offers surprising delicacy: the two cages, featuring more than 110 parts, only weigh 0.8 grams!!
This mighty double-axis tourbillon is visible from both sides of the case. The two concentric tourbillon cages enable the regulating part to make multi-dimensional rotations. The internal cage bearing escapement (with the balance, balance spring and pallet fork) completes one turn on its axis in forty-five seconds. The external cage completes one revolution in one minute and fifteen seconds on a second axis.
