Glashütte Original PanoMatic Luna Dressed in Red – Adding a Feminine Touch to German Watchmaking

Launched in 2011, the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna introduced two complications into the brand’s reduced line-up of women’s watches. The complications, a hallmark Glashütte Original Panorama big date display and a moon phase function, already featured on the men’s elegant PanoMatic Luna line, were interpreted in a more feminine key. A moon phase function is always a good excuse to introduce some poetry onto the dial of the watch and the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna features dreamy mother-of-pearl dials and a sprinkling of diamonds. To celebrate the International Day of the Kiss on 6 July 2018, the PanoMatic Luna is revisited in rubies, diamonds and a white mother-of-pearl dial in a limited edition of 50 pieces. Unlike the simpler Pavonina collection for women with its quartz movement, the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna features a Glashütte manufactory automatic calibre with the excellent finishes we associate with the Saxon brand.

A more feminine case and a romantic dial

Slightly smaller than the 40mm PanoMaticLunar devoted to men’s wrists, the limited edition red version of the PanoMatic Luna is housed in a 39.4mm stainless steel case, a more wearable size that many modern women will appreciate and a case material that is designed for everyday wear and tear. The bezel of the watch is set with 64 brilliant-cut diamonds and the crown is studded with a ruby to match the ruby indices on the dial. Arranged in classic off-centred vertical Glashütte Original fashion, the hours and minutes counter along with the intersecting small seconds are located on the left side of the dial allowing the moon phase and date apertures to occupy the right side of the dial.

As one of the few brands to have its own dial manufactory –  located in Pforzheim – the mother-of-pearl dial, measuring a wafer-thin 0.4mm was crafted entirely in-house and the counters printed directly on the delicate surface. The indices from 8 to 4 o’clock on the hours counter are highlighted with 18 rubies, a splash of colour to contrast with the pristine white background, while the hands are crafted in 18k white gold.

The complications

The brand from Saxony has made a name for itself with its Panorama big date window, a double date aperture that differs from most thanks to its presentation of the information on two discs that are at the same height and on the same level as one another. There is no overlapping disc syndrome and, in the case of the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna watch, the double rectangle that frames the men’s version is replaced with a more feminine, oval shape. The moon phase aperture, positioned between 2 and 3 o’clock, is crescent-shaped and features the waxing and waning of our celestial neighbour with a slightly curved Moon and a background of stars.  Polished to mirror quality, you can actually see yourself reflected in the Moon.

An in-house heart

The ladies’ PanoMatic Luna is equipped with Glashütte Original’s in-house Calibre 90-12, an automatic movement that can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back. A derivation of the movement inside the men’s PanoMatic Luna (calibre 90-02), the reverse side of the watch offers a true spectacle for women who appreciate the beauty of fine mechanical calibres. On display are many Glashütte Original hallmark traits like the three-quarter plate with its striped finish, the skeletonised double G-form on the rotor, the swan-neck fine adjustment mechanism, the beautifully hand-engraved balance cock, the blued screws, the bevelled edges and polished steel parts. Beating at 28,800 oscillations per hour, calibre 90-12 has a power reserve of 42 hours for the big date, hours, minutes, small seconds and moon phase functions.

Designed to match the ruby elements on the dial and provide a radiant contrast to the white mother-of-pearl background, the PanoMatic Luna is presented on a red alligator leather strap with a pin buckle.
