H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Tourbillon MEGA Cool

The Pioneer is Moser’s interpretation of a stylish sports watch with 120m water-resistance, a robust case and luminescent hands and markers. Not shy of complications, the Pioneer has appeared with a tourbillon and even a perpetual calendar. The tourbillon complication on board the Pioneer was introduced in 2018, in steel and later in red gold. For 2021, Moser revisits the Pioneer Tourbillon, also in a steel case but with an eye-catching Blue Lagoon fumé dial, christened the Pioneer Tourbillon MEGA Cool. Equipped with a double hairspring for heightened precision, a power reserve of three days and a 60-second flying tourbillon, the new model comes with four strap options, including a sporty integrated steel bracelet.

Resilient case

Crafted in steel, the Pioneer case measures 42.8mm in diameter and has a thickness of 10.8mm (not including the sapphire crystal). The alternating polished and brushed surfaces highlight the more dynamic lines of the case with its characteristic indentations along the caseband with their ribbed decoration. The screw-down crown consolidates the 120m water-resistance of the case, while the luminescent dots on the flange and inside the skeletonised hands underscore the sporty, everyday wear spirit of the watch.

Fumé Dial

The master of minimalism, Moser is also renowned for its beautiful fumé or gradient dials. It is also renowned for the quirky names attributed to the different colours used on the dials: Cosmic green, Swiss Mad Red and the original Funky Blue, to name but a few. The Blue Lagoon colour made its debut on the Venturer Concept watch of 2018 and has since become one of the most desirable colours. Evoking the turquoise waters of island lagoons, its emerald green tone plays with the light thanks to the sunburst pattern radiating from the centre.

The large faceted anthracite grey indices are applied to the dial and feature a small dot at their base filled with Super-LumiNova. The hands, made from two sections, are overlaid with strips of Globolight, an innovative ceramic-based material containing Super-LumiNova. In deference to the minimalism associated with Moser’s dials, the brand’s logo is discreetly rendered in transparent lacquer.

Calibre HMC 804

A large aperture at 6 o’clock houses the one-minute flying tourbillon traversed by a skeletonised bridge for maximum viewing pleasure. The Pioneer Tourbillon MEGA Cool is equipped with Moser’s in-house automatic HMC 804 calibre with a double hairspring, also designed and produced in-house. Its matched hairsprings improve accuracy and reduce the effect of friction experienced with a single hairspring. Another ingenious feature is the modular tourbillon escapement which can be easily extracted from its cage and serviced. The bi-directional 18k red gold rotor has also been skeletonised to let you enjoy the movement and keeps the watch ticking for three days.

Straps & Price

The Pioneer Tourbillon MEGA Cool is limited to 50 watches. There are four strap options available: green Kevlar (synthetic fibre), black rubber, hand-stitched black alligator leather, and an integrated stainless steel bracelet with a steel folding clasp. The price is CHF 49,000 but probably varies depending on which strap option you choose.
