Charles Girardier is a young independent brand created in 2018 by Patrick A. Ulm, with the idea of resurrecting the work of Charles Girardier the Elder, a 19th-century Geneva-based watchmaker. The brand specializes in making complicated watches featuring Métiers d’Art. Following the award in the Ladies’ Complication category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2020, Charles Girardier now opens up the 1809 collection to a male audience. Meet the Charles Girardier 1809 Cobalt Blue 41mm.

The first version of the Charles Girardier 1809 collection dedicated to men is presented in a 41mm white gold case. It combines a cobalt blue Grand Feu enamel dial with a flying tourbillon automatic movement and a miniature automaton. A counterpoint to the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, the Charles Girardier C and G initials at 12 o’clock are in motion, animated by the brand’s mysterious signature mechanism. Customers may request their own initials or other designs for a Signature Mystérieuse that is unique to them.

The enamel dial is cobalt blue enamel applied on a gold base plate that has been adorned with a chevron pattern. To obtain depth and brilliance, eight layers of enamel are applied in succession and fired in a kiln. The final glaze is translucent enamel known as fondant. The elegant applied indices are paired with faceted dauphine-style hands.

The watch is powered by the self-winding CG Calibre 1809 manufactured with Geneva-based movement maker Timeless. It displays the hours, minutes and the seconds on the flying tourbillon pulsating at 6 o’clock. Turning the watch over, the exhibition caseback reveals the movement with its peripheral rotor, itself offering an unimpeded view on the frosted bridges. The movement incorporates a second, small oscillating weight used to power the automaton driving the motion of the C and G initials (this mechanism is the subject of a patent application that is currently pending).
