Introducing The Romain Jerome Batman-DNA

“To the Batcave, Robin!” I can vividly remember growing up in the eighties, awaiting a new episode of the Batman-saga every Saturday morning. Even though I was born in 1984 and the Batman franchise first saw the light of day in 1939, he was a big part of my childhood. Later there were of course three brilliant movies, starting with Batman Begins in 2005. In honour of the 75th anniversary of the superhero, RJ releases the Romain Jerome Batman-DNA. 

Being perhaps the most human superhero of the lot, solely relying on his intellect, and physical strength combined with cutting edge science and limitless resources, Batman is the hero that people can relate to the most. Admittedly, the situations the Batman finds himself in, or the stunts he pulls off, are very “Hollywood” but other than that, his antics are plausible. Inspired by the darkness that so often dwells in Gotham City, the Batman-DNA is done in full black. MONOCHROME BLACK! To set things apart from previous timepieces from the brand, the bezel of the Batman-DNA is now facetted with both polished and satin-brushed surfaces.

The dial is done in graphite-black with a rough finishing and the matte black lacquered Batman logo SLAP! BANG! in the middle. Almost coming at you through the dial, the logo is reminiscent of the one used for The Dark Knight Rises. The emblematic depiction of a bat has changed a lot over the years, almost to the point that every instalment of the saga has its own. In order to up the cool-factor just a little more, the logo is surrounded by black Superlominova C1 which glows a blue hue in the dark. The black polished hands feature the same luminous material on the tips.

The Batman-DNA is equipped with a familiar movement, as it is the same they used in the Tattoo-DNA, the Dia de los Muertos, the Liberty-DNA and the Gotham-esque Liberty-DNA Black. Displaying hours and minutes only, the RJ001-A automatic movement is an ETA/Valjoux clone, produced by either Concepto or La Joux Perret. The movement is housed in a 46mm round, black PVD-coated, steel case featuring the trademark clasps surrounding the case and grabbing the bezel. The back is decorated with an engraving of the same logo as on the dial.

The Batman –DNA is available in a run of 75 pieces, and will cost you $ 18,500 USD / € 14,950 Euro. This could be considered a lot for “just” a comic-related watch, but for the true fans it might be within reach. First-day fans and collectors might have a pile of items in storage that can easily cover the price tag of this watch. The Batman-series is known for generating a lot of very valuable collectables since day one. Now if I can only find my mint condition Batman #1 issue.
