The Swiss brand Romain Jerome is irrevocably linked to some of the most fun, non-discreet and sometimes just plain cool watches out there. On the very top of most of our minds might probably be the Batman-DNA. An interpretation of everybody’s favourite Vigilante for the wrist, it payed homage to the Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Trilogy“. While running around Baselworld 2016, we went hands-on with the new Romain Jerome Batman-DNA Gotham City and bring you live pictures of the second winged crusader timepiece.

Romain Jerome is never shy or reserved, we all know that. Doing just a classically engineered piece is not their cup of tea. It would need something to set it apart from the rest, something quirky, and something that other brands might run away from, some pazazz if you will. One of the best examples of this creative outburst is the Batman-DNA, launched in 2014. It brought me back to childhood memories of watching episodes of the show, on a Saturday morning.

The difference between the new Batman-DNA, now known as the “Gotham City”, compared to the old one is just the dial. The 46mm case remains the same, and so is the self-winding movement. The case is still done in stainless steel with a black PVD coating, and a black PVD coated, facetted bezel. Each hand-finished facetted surface of the bezel is either brushed or polished, as it was on the previous one.

Where the first Batman-DNA had the logo crashing through the dial, this Gotham City version comes with a very vivid 3D dial, with the logo slap bang in the middle again. The dial is filled with C1 Superluminova emitting a blue hue when charged. It creates a birds-eye view of the city, with the buildings surrounding the dial shaped in such a way they seem to move out towards the edge of the dial. It might be a bit hard to explain, but if you look at the pictures, you’ll get the idea. What it does though, is reminds me of the movie poster of “The Dark Knight Rises” where the Bat logo was formed by crumbling buildings. See the resemblance?

As mentioned, we find the same movement inside the Batman-DNA Gotham City as we do in most of these tribute pieces by Romain Jerome. It is the automatic RJ001-A movement, which was also used in the Tattoo-DNA, the Dia de los Muertos or the Pacman-Level II.

  1. This is a really fantastic watch which came out after the first Batman DNA which was completely sold out in the first year . The timing is interesting as it “co-incides” with the new batman vs superman movie.
