The Reverso is a watch of rare longevity. In fact, it is probably one of the watch models with the longest track record. The Reverso was created back in 1931 and since then, its unique concept of a reversible and protective case has been one of the pillars of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s success. As the Reverso approaches its 90th anniversary in 2021, the brand is bound to release several important new models. But before that, Jaeger-LeCoultre treats us to a reinterpretation of a classic, with the Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano Limited in a striking combination of pink gold and burgundy red.

As Rebecca explained in a previous article on this icon of the watch industry: “The Reverso was LeCoultre’s ingenious response to a request from British colonial army officers stationed in India. As keen polo players, they were constantly smashing the glass on their watches and jeopardizing the mechanism of their wristwatches during the brutal matches. In 1931, LeCoultre patented its reversible watch (it wasn’t until 1937 that Jaeger merged to become Jaeger-LeCoultre). A triumph of Art Deco restraint and sleek geometric glamour, the Reverso was launched the same year as the Empire State Building, marking the birth of two 20th-century design masterpieces that still captivate today.

Surprisingly, this article published in 2019 presented two watches: a burgundy small seconds Reverso Tribute and a pink gold Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano Limited with blue dial. It seems that Jaeger-LeCoultre found an interesting combination here and has decided to introduce another Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano Limited with a burgundy dial.

Technically speaking and in terms of the overall design, there are no surprises here. The classic recipe of the two-faced Reverso Duoface, a concept introduced by the brand in 1994 is alive and well. JLC has decided to replace the blank caseback – used by many collectors for a special engraving – with a second dial to display additional indications. In the case of the present Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano, the main face is dedicated to the local time with hours, minutes and small seconds, while the additional face, the reverse side, displays indications useful for travellers with a second time zone and a 24h day-night indicator.

This twin display is powered by the in-house hand-wound calibre 854A/2. This oval-shaped engine is relatively small to fit into the narrow case of the Reverso. It has 19 jewels and has a slim height of just 3.80mm. It stores 42 hours of power reserve and beats at 21,600 vibrations/hours. As you can imagine, due to the fact that the two faces are used to display timekeeping indications, the movement isn’t visible.

For its latest version of the Reverso the brand crafts the 47mm (height) x 28.3mm (width) reversible case in 18k pink gold, with typical Art Deco inspiration – including the triple groove (gadroons) framing the dial. It is secured to the wrist thanks to a handsome strap mixing burgundy Cordovan leather and canvas. The strap is handmade by Casa Fagliano and inspired by the canvas-and-leather boots they make for summer polo. It is closed by a pin buckle in 18k pink gold.

Even before the Reverso’s first anniversary, coloured dials were introduced creating a vivid contrast with the case metal and adding a note of exuberance to this watch collection. JLC pays tribute to this with yet another slightly eccentric coloured dial, here in a rich burgundy red with gold-coloured applied markers and hands. The reverse side is more classic, with a silver colour over a Clous de Paris guillochage.
