Jerry Seinfeld Rocking a Vintage Rolex 6239 Daytona with Solid Racing Provenance
Porsche-fan actor Seinfeld wearing a racing-related Rolex piece of history on his wrist.
My friend Jake Ehrlich, who runs RolexMagazine.com, messaged me the other day regarding Jerry Seinfeld on his Netflix show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. He was wondering if he was hallucinating after seeing Seinfeld wearing a vintage Rolex Daytona. We know Seinfeld loves his modern and vintage Breitlings and he also owns a vintage Heuer Autavia “Siffert”, but I haven’t seen him with a Rolex.
After viewing the episode, Seinfeld was indeed wearing a Reference 6239 Daytona. We see it on his wrist, while driving his guest Barry Marder around in a 1966 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet and when they are drinking coffee in a diner. Seinfeld stared at the watch for a fleeting moment before they receive their cups of coffee.
In the end credits, the provenance of the watch is also provided.
The watch belonged to Vic Elford, a British racing driving legend who received the watch after winning the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona in a Porsche 907. Here is the picture from 1968 of Elford, holding the watch in its box after receiving it. It has a stainless steel bezel, with a black dial and white sub-dials. The words Units Per Hour are spelled out all in one line at the one o’clock position on the tachymeter bezel.
Elford also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice and participated in Steve McQueen’s racing film Le Mans. He wore the watch periodically after receiving it and the photos below show the watch on his wrist. That’s what you call rock-solid provenance!
In 2009, Spike Feresten mentioned on his podcast that Seinfeld had purchased Elford’s Daytona. It makes sense considering Seinfeld is a massive Porsche fan and collector. There were no sightings of Seinfeld wearing it at all until the sixth episode of Season 11 of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee came along.
It is uber-cool to see Seinfeld rocking a timepiece with legit racing provenance!
My thanks to Jake for the heads up on Seinfeld wearing the watch and here is a link to his article.
