For the first time this year, Nomos is participating in Watches & Wonders, the major digital watch event of 2021 and is presenting some new models. Most importantly, the German brand is presenting an updated version of its Metro model. However, the name ‘Update’ refers to two separate things. With its sleek design, accessible complications and fresh look, let’s take a closer look at Nomos and the new Metro neomatik 41 Update – which we had the chance to see in the metal and have in front of our camera for a video review too.

As mentioned in the intro, the name Update has here two meanings. Sure, this new version is an update of the already existing Metro watch. But it also refers to the main topic of the day: its complication. First launched in the all-time classic Tangente in 2018, this new version is all about an original date display, but more on that later.

Let’s start with the watch itself. The Metro is a more youthful, more cosmopolitan, and more modern take on the brand’s clean design language. Measuring 40.5mm in diameter for a thin 9.1mm height – making it the largest model in the Metro collection – the case has a super-large dial opening, an almost non-existent bezel and a very sleek profile. It is fully polished, equipped with thin wire lugs, flat sides, and a crown with fine diamond knurling. The main difference with the Tangente, which has flat surfaces and angular lugs, is a smoother design and a domed sapphire crystal. The watch is water-resistant to 50 metres and, despite a rather large diameter for the brand, sits flush on the wrist and feels compact, even on my small 16.5cm wrist.

The dial of this Metro neomatik 41 Update is also typical Nomos. Very understated at first, yet with small funky details that give a cool, young vibe. The silver-coloured surface is slightly grained with a fine concentric pattern on the small seconds. Time is indicated by thin and elegant oxidized black hands and read thanks to 0 to 60 markers on the dial.

But what really matters here is the original date display on the periphery of the dial. Set far out around the minute markers, the Update complication ensures that the entire month is always in view and that the current date is well in sight. Indeed, a series of small apertures frame the date with two neon orange markers. And that makes this patented date display far more interesting than a traditional date window at 3 o’clock…

Turn the watch over, and you’ll get a view of a very nice movement. Like the previous Tangente Update, the Nomos Metro neomatik 41 Update is powered by the in-house calibre DUW 6101. This ultra-thin automatic movement, here with a date indication, is larger than the classic neomatik but still measures only 3.6mm in height. Nicely decorated, it features an embossed and gold-plated engraving on the rotor, thin stripes on the typically German three-quarter bridge and heat-blued screws. It boasts 42 hours of power reserve, features stop-seconds, and its date can be adjusted by quick jumps, both forwards and backwards.

To complete the contemporary look, Nomos gives its new Metro Update a casual, urban-style dark grey textile strap that perfectly matches the low-key design of this watch. Again, it’s very comfy and supple, not too serious – that’s why we like Nomos – and is closed by a nicely designed steel buckle. It also equipped with quick-change spring bars, so you’ll be able to change the strap easily.
