Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition

The 3rd of October is an important date for German citizens, probably the most important day in their recent history. On 3 October 1990, both sides of Germany (GDR and DDR, split since 1949) were reunited following the Fall of the Berlin Wall a year before. As a German watch manufacturer, reunification is important for Sinn… In fact, more important than you might imagine. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of German reunification the brand unveils a new model, the Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition – based on the brand’s much-beloved dive watch.

Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition

As the brand explains: “The reunification has another significance beyond this historical date for us as a German watchmaker. For us it’s synonymous with the story of two companies which continue to actively embrace the merging of East and West to this day: qualified engineer Lothar Schmidt, owner of Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH, and Doctor of Engineering Ronald Boldt, co-owner and Managing Director of Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte (SUG), have continued to develop the partnership established in 1999 between Sinn Spezialuhren and SUG. Lothar Schmidt has held 74% of all SUG shares since the disastrous flood of 2002. Working with Ronald Boldt, he has created an upmarket case manufacturing company, which is now successfully managed primarily by son Daniel Boldt.” Just like the statement made by Willy Brandt when the Berlin Wall came down on 9 November 1989: “Now what belongs together will grow together.

Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition

Celebrating this important anniversary, as well as the spirit of  “working together”, the brand is unveiling a new limited edition today, the Sinn U1 DE (for Deutschland), based on one of the watchmaker’s signature models, the much-appreciated, ultra-robust U1 dive watch, known as a reference in the field of instrument aquatic watches. The 44mm x 14.7mm case of this U1 DE is made from high-strength German Submarine Steel, which is highly resistant to saltwater and boasts outstanding non-magnetic properties. The watch comes with a full Black Hard Coating, which is used exclusively for surfaces with TEGIMENT technology.

As a true diver’s watch, the Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition is fitted with a unidirectional bezel with a highly legible 60-minute scale and the brand’s unique captive connection to the case. The crown, positioned at 4 o’clock, allows for ergonomic operations and the case, with sapphire crystal on top and solid steel caseback, is water-resistant to 1,000 metres. Testing on the watch is based on European diving equipment standards and certified by DNV GL.

Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition

The main specificity of this edition is the combination of colours – black, red and gold – which is a direct reference to Germany’s national colours – reunification was celebrated with the raising of a black, red and gold flag in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin. As such, the matte black dial is highlighted with red printings (also on the bezel) and the seconds hand is gold plated. Other than that, the watch retains its superb contrast and legibility, in daytime or night-time conditions. A date is found at 3 o’clock with a tone-on-tone disc.

Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition

Powering the Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition is the ubiquitous automatic Sellita SW 200-1, a clone of the ETA 2824. Running at 4Hz and offering 38h of power reserve, it is a simple yet robust option.

The watch is available either on a solid stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp, which is black coated just like the case. Black or red rubber straps with folding clasps are also available.

The Sinn U1 DE Limited Edition is limited to 300 pieces and can now be pre-ordered on the brand’s website. It is priced at EUR 2,650 on rubber and EUR 2,740 on a steel bracelet. More details at sinn.de.
