Pre Baselworld 2014: Introducing the Girard-Perregaux 1966 in Pink Gold with Deep Blue Dial

Just 6 weeks to go before Baselwolrd (the other important watch trade show) starts and new watches are being pre-released almost on a daily basis. Girard-Perregaux introduces a new execution of their all-time, all-round, classic, the GP 1966. The new GP1966 features a stunning colour combination of pink gold and deep blue. I’m looking forward to seeing the result ‘in the flesh’.

This new GP1966 in pink gold with deep blue dial has a diameter of 38 mm, and is 8.62 mm in height. That is quite thin although it will not break any “ultra-thin records”. There are also 41mm models of the GP1966, however this new version is only available in 38mm. The slightly domed dial is like a signature feature of the GP1966 collection. The deep blue dial features a subtle sunburst finish that looks splendid and will show the wearer a lovely interplay of reflections.

The date is positioned at the 3 o’clock position and while I usually do not mind a white date disk with a black dial, I wouldn’t mind if Girard-Perregaux would change the colour of the date disk to the same blue as the dial. Somehow that would bring more balance to this otherwise gorgeous timepiece.

The double baton hour marker at 12 and the single baton hour markers at 3, 6 and 9 are beautiful details, just like the leaf-shaped hour and minute hands. The baton hour markers and all three hands are gilded in the same pink gold as the case. The other hour markers are painted.

The brand’s logo and name are also painted on the upper part f the dial, while the word “automatic” is painted on the lower half.

A detail that absolutely adds to the great looks, and superb comfort on the wrist, are the short lugs. Because the stay very close to the case and a curved strap is fitted in between, the 38 mm large GP1966 will perfectly fit the smallest wrists. Besides that, it simply looks great on every wrist. The dark blue alligator leather strap, which matches the deep blue dial, is closed with a pink gold pin buckle.

Inside the case, and visible through the sapphire crystal in the case back, is Girard-Perregaux’s in-house movement, caliber GP03300-0030. This is a self-winding movement (hence the word “automatic” on the dial) that ticks at 28,800 vph (4Hz). The single main spring stores enough energy for 46 hours of autonomy, when fully wound.
